MadDogs Update, February 2012

Hi, all,

The February 2012 update to the MadDogs site is at http://www.kumaddogs.org
You may need to refresh your browser to see the latest update.

The main photo on the home page this month shows Justin Douglas at the Topeka
to Auburn Half-Marathon a couple of weeks ago.
The small rotating photos show the distinguished group at Fun Run XV in
February 2007, Gary Henry at the Psycho Wyco 50K trail run in February 2007,
and me just after finishing the Salem Lakeshore 50K in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, three weeks ago and running the Frost Giant 5K in Estes Park on
Sunday.
Please send in your race, running, or other photos of interest.
Let me know if you've run any races that aren't on our website. I scanned the
Groundhog Run and didn't see any familiar names, but it was a big race.

............

Peter Lorenzi won the MadDogs bowl contest with a 25-10 record, one game
ahead
of Larry Brady. Peter wins a distinctive and stylish MadDogs running cap.
Carl
Fischer and Harold Yarger tied for second at 23-12.
The standings are at the link at http://www.kumaddogs.org/photos/index.html
Peter also won last year, and in both cases, he didn't spend much time
reflecting on the games. He sent in his picks both years within a few minutes
after I sent out the contest note.
Stay tuned for the NCAA basketball contest in a couple of months.

...............

Meb Keflezighi won the men's US Olympic marathon trials in Houston with Ryan
Hall second, and Shalane Flanagan won the women's trials. Here's a good
summary of both races:

And here's a brief video recap of the women's race, thanks to Gene Wee and

Jim Guthrie pointed out the following on Bob Lida. Bob is a former KU
sprinter
who continues to excel -- two recent world records in the 75-79 age group.

Some upcoming races of interest:

Feb. 11 -- Luv2Run 4-mile at Free State HS
(http://www.sportkc.org/sportkc.aspx?pgID=866&event_id=671)
March 10 -- Shamrock Shuffle 5K
(http://lawrencestpatricksdayparade.com/5Krun.html)
April 1 -- Brew to Brew 43-mile relay and solo run (http://brewtobrew.com/)
I'm returning for the Brew to Brew run along with Ed Payne, and it would be
great to see many of you out there. You can run as a team of two to ten
members (or solo), so there's something for everyone.
More info on upcoming races is available on the RunLawrence website at
http://www.runlawrence.org/

Please send any running cartoons you may have.

A personal update from Jim Guthrie:
On the running front, I seem to always be injured or coming back from an
injury. Over the last year I have logged more miles on the elliptical trainer
than on the roads. Regardless, I remain optimistic that someday I will
overcome my leg miseries and become a more
active Mad Dog. I just got back from a short stay in New Zealand (University
of Auckland) as part of my spring sabbatical. I was running pretty
consistently down there until (surprise!) I injured my calf again. So I'm
back
on the elliptical. I will also be traveling to Ireland this semester for a
short visit as a prof-in-residence. Most of the time I will be here in
tropical Lawrence (it's January 31st today and the temperature is around
70F).
My wife continues to thrive as a free-lance photographer, often combining her
photographic skill with her master gardening expertise to publish in many
national magazines. My son (Dylan) is a sophomore at KU and my daughter
(Julia) will be graduating from Free State High School in May. Julia's health
continues to improve so what else could I possibly ask for? Life is good!

From Carl Fischer:
Finished a mediocre season this year - a lot of riding and racing on the
bike,
one Olympic triathlon, a half marathon and not much else as far as competing.
I won my first (bicycle) road race in the "Men's Category 4" race in the
Sunflower State Games in July. Our son remains deployed to Djibouti with the
Kansas National Guard and our daughter will marry in June - she got a
teaching
job this term in Olathe (as a full-time sub) teaching HS chemistry. She
completed the UKan Teach program in 2010. I am still working with the Army
folks up on Fort Leavenworth. My wife and I commute to work together on our
bikes every chance we get. What a great way to start our day. Hope to work
harder on the running this year.

And the latest from Fran Breslauer, who was knocked down and injured by
another runner at a water stop in the New York Marathon in November:
The orthopedist gave me the go ahead to run again! It's been a long haul.
I'll
still have to continue OT for a while. The dislocated pinky finger was not
initially set properly so I probably will never be able to make a complete
fist on that hand, but the other two fingers are healing. I still cannot wear
my wedding ring but that will take a long time, perhaps a year. I hope
tomorrow morning I can run with the Saturday morning group in Central Park.
They usually do a six-mile loop. Next week I hope to begin the classes at the
NY Sports Club where my membership was put on "pause".
Once again I was nominated for "runner of the year" in my age group. Once
again my competitor who runs fewer races, and only those she can win, is the
other nominee. I was poised to surpass her in the marathon, but the accident
interfered--c'est la vie.
